Sara Hernando
Legal Assistant @ Fred E. Walker, P.C.
In my position, I assist the attorneys with anything they may need.
How I Got Here
ShowI changed my major from Psychology to Sociology.
I was looking for a job right before I graduated from UT and had applied several different places. The position at the law firm met my requirements for a first job out of college. My undergraduate degree allowed me to think in a way that helps me deal with clients everyday.
I wanted a job where I could learn a lot and a job where I had a lot of responsibility.
The Ups and Downs
ShowPros: the ability to work directly for the attorneys, having a lot of responsiblity with little micro-managing (we're too busy!), and free lunches on Fridays.
Cons: stress, no health benefits, and an overwhelming amount of work.
Recommendations
ShowMy advice would be to explore the educational and work-related (ex: internships, work-study, etc) opportunities you have in college. There is no other place where you have all the resources to learn and find what you are passionate about. Don't take it for granted. Also, study abroad.
